Discover What Ultrasound Technicians Do

UltrasoundThe occupation of ultrasound technicians is a high-demand field today and will continue to be in the future. If you're interested in becoming a part of a team that helps people diagnose medical conditions while earning a good income in a lucrative field, read on to discover the world of ultrasound technicians.

Ultrasound technicians are also called ultrasonographers or simply sonographers. They work to obtain similar images as x-ray machines and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans. As ultrasound technicians, you will be able to find out what's wrong inside a patient's body without surgery. The difference between ultrasound and other diagnosis methods is how the image is generated. With this technology, ultrasound technicians use a machine that reflects sound waves, creating an image of the patient's body organs and other parts. Pregnant women often use ultrasound technology to see their babies on a screen attached to the ultrasound machine.

As ultrasound technicians, you have to operate the machine and look for certain indications or abnormal problem areas. These machines are able to take still pictures and videos of real-time ultrasound for later viewing by the doctors. Ultrasound technicians must ensure that all images and videos they take are clear enough for the patient's doctors to view because they will use the information to make a diagnosis. Ultrasound technicians may also perform other duties, such as perform calculations, obtain measurements and evaluate ultrasound results.

Ultrasound technicians usually graduated with a two-year associates degree or a four-year bachelor's degree. Some obtain a one-year certificate for specializations in other medical related fields, such as echocardiography, mammography, OB/GYN sonography, vascular technology, neurosonography and abdominal sonography.

More than 50 percent of ultrasound technicians are employed in hospitals. However, employment opportunities for ultrasound techs are also available in private doctor's clinics, medical laboratories and other ultrasound imaging centers.
