All ultrasound technician training programs focus on the essential topics in sonographic physics, instrumentation, abdominal sonography, OB/GYN and other science-related subjects.
At the end of an ultrasound technician training, students will learn how to interact with patients, record patient medical histories, perform non-invasive procedures using state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment and prepare ultrasound images to be used by physicians for diagnosis. For those who have completed ultrasound technician training and undergone specialization, their responsibilities may differ from general ultrasound techs.
If you wish to obtain ultrasound technician training, you should choose between a two-year associate degree and a four-year bachelor's degree. However, some schools offer short ultrasound technician training for specializations or continuing education of professionals from other medical-related fields.
An ultrasound technician training includes hands-on instruction in sonography, human anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and sonography for the eyes, brain, abdomen and breasts, among others. Many ultrasound technician training require their students to complete an unpaid clinical externship or internship in a professional ultrasound facility under supervision of certified technicians. Duration of on-the-job training may depend on different ultrasound technician training programs, but usually range between three to six months.
Although licensure is not a requirement for ultrasound tech employment, many technicians pursue additional credentials, such as registration with the ARDMS (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers) to enjoy career advancements and higher compensation. However, some technicians pursue continuing education credits through other ultrasound technician training offered by trade organizations such as the American Society of Neuroimaging and Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Certifications, registrations and additional credits can increase an individual's credibility in the field of sonography, leasing to better employment at hospitals, clinics and other medical facilities.
