Sonography Education
Sonography Education Options
When you enroll into any sonography education program, you must plan to spend at least four years gaining your sonography education. Many colleges give you an option to gain a two-year associates degree or a four-year bachelor degree in sonography education program. Before you make a choice, you should be aware that just as many colleges will not allow you into their two-year programs unless you have completed a program in allied health care. The two-year programs have less time to focus on patient care and patient relations, so students must have already completed another program that covers these topics. For the majority, the four-year sonography education is the best option.
During a four-year sonography education, you will be required to take courses in American history, college level algebra, college level physics, computer basics, English composition, human anatomy, human physiology, philosophy, psychology, public speaking, sociology, and world history. Some of these college courses are available to high schoolers, so you can meet these prerequisites while still in high school. Otherwise, you will need to take these courses in your freshman year of college. To complete your sonography education program, you will take courses in abdominal sonography, advanced anatomy, advanced obstetrics, advanced physics, cardiac sonography, Doppler sonographs, gynecologic sonography, healthcare practices, hemodynamics, patient care, sonography, and vascular sonography.
You will spend your sonography education program supplementing your education with clinical lab studies that allow you to learn how to use the equipment. Over summer breaks, many colleges require you to work part-time in an internship to gain necessary experience out of the classroom setting. Your sonography education program is not going to be easy. By the time you graduate, you will have upwards of 80 credits. You will also be required to take a number of advanced courses in the final year of your sonography education program.
