Cardiac Sonography
What Is Cardiac Sonography?
Soaring numbers of patients with heart disease have many hospitals rushing to find qualified cardiac sonography technicians. Those involved in cardiac sonography must be able to perform ultrasound scans of the heart looking for valves that are not functioning properly, weakened heart function, clogged or thickened arteries, and chambers that are not effectively moving the blood around. One involved in cardiac sonography must be highly skilled in the anatomy of the heart, its function, and the process of using sonography equipment to capture detailed images of the heart, its chambers, and the arteries and valves.
Cardiac sonography is one of the best tools there is against catching heart trouble, particularly due to deformities, and it is not just adults in need of cardiac sonography. Many children and newborn infants have heart problems that are caught on the detailed images. Caught early enough, the problems can be surgically repaired allowing children to have a long and healthy life. Cardiac sonography is used for diagnostics.
A grown man with an irregular heart rhythm will also undergo cardiac sonography to find the underlying cause. In some cases, the problem will require the use of a camera lead into the heart to find a blockage or weakened valve. They can also be used to go in and see if a heart attack has caused permanent damage. If these procedures are required, cardiac sonography can be used to help insert needles safely into the heart without damaging the muscle. Sonographers with this specialty must be highly trained to handle emergency situations. It is also critical that they not make mistakes on the job, so a four-year college program is usually required.
